Back last Thursday from a great session in Bali, organised by my friend Shirley Winstanley. She sure knows how to get the most out of an Art trip! We were non stop Arting for 9 days. Exhausted and satisfied all at once.

We leave on the 30th for our next Art Group in Bali. This time with Shirley Winstanley at the helm, coaching us about using a black background canvas technique that she uses to get her wonderful rich integrated tonal effects and highlights. Perfect for studio paining of nudes and intense lighting. Cant wait!

Well we are under way at our new Basso venue and its fantastic!
Massive space in two parts opening out to a private courtyard and garden, fantastic kitchen,
great lighting, air con, music, tables and chairs provided. This is luxury life and portrait drawing at its best. Sorry no pic, too excited on the opening day to remember. I promise one after next week.
We had no trouble accommodating 22 portrait artists and 18 life drawers so there is plenty of room if you would like to join us. Parking seemed to work, even thought they had decided to close our street and parking space in order to relocate a memorial. If you are attending we are suggesting that for now you drop off your gear at the back drop off bay and then park your car in a side street.
The space is so convenient to our needs that we are already plotting up some new ways to present life drawing and portraiture to artists.. As there is a low stage we are thinking tableau, costume, maybe moving models etc. As well as we are on a Monday which often means long weekends we are thinking of having long weekend Mondays as all day special events including a lunch.

Its on again at Basso this year!
We start again with one session only at our regular venue, St Marks Church Hall in Parker St Bassendean 9.30 to 12.30 for the staring week Tuesday 3rd of February $15. Sorry if this is a cross posting.
From MONDAY 9th February we will be in our new venue, Basso Community Hall, same times. This is a fabulous new space, room for three sessions in the one room, good light, air con, easy parking in James St. Hope to see you there!
Nine great days in Bali drawing and painting. We all decided to have a go at really creating a breakthrough around using colour in portraits, so it was into the acrylics and lots frustrating and varied successes. Great fun, but wow, lots to learn. We visited Pranoto studio 3 times, always a special event this time enhanced with a model from Poland who was exceptional. Some drawings later in my gallery.
Weather was very dry and the rainy season had not started. Bali is in a severe drought. Up around Ubud there were about 3 climates per day, grumpy hot, humid and cool. Better when it rains!
Had a good day at Basso yesterday, beautiful model and a one hour pose [right] so I got out my richer pastels to do a study. Left one is a 10 minute special. Last bit of local drawing for a while as I am off to Bali on Monday for 2 weeks of studio and outdoor work around Pondok Saraswati and with the Pranoto Studios. Sigh. These things must be done.

Great to open up the site today and pop in a new post. I am starting to get the hang of working with word press and [almost] ready to venture into more comprehensive gallery arrangements. Its my intention to keep my website as alive as possible.
Not possible when I am in Bali but, hey, I’m in Bali! By the way I still have one late spot available for a 4th artist to join me on the 13th October. Just completed my 27 works for the Montessori Cube27 exhibition. Its been great fun but a bit of a challenge for me to work into small dimensions. They are mostly portraits from current works from here and in Bali.

A new website!
Yes this is my new website. My old one has served me well but now, with countless years of life drawing up my sleeve its time to create a new direction about what what I am up to in the life drawing world.
These days I am doing quite a lot of coaching, both in my studio here in Perth and also in Bali. As well I coach models and send out information on their behalf to a select group of people who hire models. In Perth I am happy to do coaching on an informal basis for free, as there are so many shorts cuts and tricks of the trade that can easily advance a potential artist with just a few visits to a studio. Cost of the model must be met by the student.
As well my work is shifting towards painting, and I am not sure as yet if that is going to involve painting figures as I also enjoy landscapes.
So there will be fewer works in my galleries at the moment, and a promise to update old images. Also thinking about some standard pricing and smaller works.
